Market the Keyword, Not the Product

By: SEO Advisor, Sat Feb 27th, 2010

You want to sell a product. You have designed a website to market it. Now you are waiting for web traffic to appear and make online purchases. But it is not happening. Why? That is because you are trying to market a product, where as you should be marketing a keyword. Let me explain.

Don't try to be everything to everybody and be listed on every search engine at the top. You and I are bunch of nobodies. But we can still make decent money if we grab a small share of the search space and keep it.

Whether it is Bing, or Yahoo, or Google, for proper SEO (Search Engine Optimization), I think one needs to pick the keyword and design the website to promote that keyword. Not other way around. In other words, you will not be marketing a product or a service, but you will be marketing a "keyword".

There are tools to help you with it. First and foremost, you need to find a keyword that people are searching for. It does not help to get listed at the top of a search engine if nobody is searching for that keyword.

Use the reverse keyword search tool to find out what the users are searching for so that you can pick the right search keywords to design your site for:

Here is another strategy for you: For the top keywords competition will be high. But what if you could bid for the bottom 1000 related keywords in PPC programs? They don't have as much competition, thus pay per per click prices are much lower. But why are they not popular?? Because: Not many sites advertise for an exact keyword like : "HP Printer Ink A7887DC8", they advertise for "Printer Ink". But if someone is searching for "HP Printer Ink A7887DC8" it means they know what they want and they will buy it when they find it!! If you can list the exact item on your website, boom. It does not matter that your website does not appear at the top, you can still sell.
